Pup Creek Falls Hike Sunday August 31st, 2014

Can you feel the days getting shorter and the nights cooler? Anybody else feeling the urge to get out while the getting is good?

Join us for an end of summer hike to Pup Creek Falls this Sunday August 31st. We are carpooling, leaving from Sellwood at 10 am (more info below).

Our last hike to Opal Creek in June was delightful despite getting sprinkled on. Here are some photos.

We walked along the creek for part the hike and were surrounded by towering old growth Douglas Firs.

This Sunday we head southeast to Clackamas county. This will be my first time to Pup Creek Falls. An out and back, we will take the Clackamas River Trail about 3.5 miles to the waterfall, then turn around. The total distance will be 7 + miles. We will move at a fairly leisurely pace and take plenty of rest and snack breaks.

Three Tips For Healthy Eating On the Road

What are your travel plans this month? Did you know that you can easily put together a healthy meal from the grocery store in the time it would take you grab a bag of burgers at the drive through?

Healthy eating while on the road is something most of my clients struggle with. I advise them to identify and anticipate things that may derail their healthy habits, then have a backup plan or two in mind so they can handle these surprises with grace.

Swim lessons lasted longer than you expected and you now are dealing with grumpy kids? Headed to the mountain or the coast and the only options you passed were fast food joints? No worries Anne has you covered. Find a grocery store and remember these tips and you will be enjoying a healthy nutritious meal in no time.

I suggest you shop the perimeter of the store working your way through produce, then the bulk bins, then the deli/ salad bar. Beware the displays and center aisles. When you are hungry your willpower and good intentions will be no match for that giant bag of chips or cookies.

Remember if it has a commercial or a jingle it is probably not something you should put in your mouth.

1) Start With Produce

Load your cart with fresh fruit and veggies. Grab a head of lettuce, a bag of baby carrots, a few cukes, apples, bananas, pears, peaches, apricots, cherry tomatoes, blueberries.

Bonus points for keeping a knife, jug of water to rinse your produce, and a cooler in your trunk. If you do not have these ask the produce person nicely and they may rinse your veggies for you. Find cutlery in the deli to slice veggies.

2) Hit the bulk bins

almonds 8.14

Heart healthy almonds, walnuts cashews and sunflower seeds provide good fats, protein, and energy to keep you going.

cashews 8.14

Want something sweet? Avoid pre-made trail mix as it can often be loaded with sugar and stick to dried fruits like dates, cranberries, and raisins.

3) Head To The Salad Bar/ Deli

Remember those cukes you threw in your basket? They would go nicely with some all natural hummus or salsa. Look for pre-sliced cheeses and deli meats to make a lettuce wrap.

If you only have time to grab and go, pick up a pre-made salad like this Asian quinoa salad from New Seasons. I often stop at their salad bar for lunch and for under $8 I can put together a huge salad with greens, peppers, cottage cheese, fresh ginger and garlic, pineapple, pickled veggies, ham or turkey, and a sprinkle of parm that keeps me full all afternoon.

Body Image Issues And Why I Stopped Doing Fitness Testing

Recently one of my ladies brought up this study, which led to a conversation about body image during Pilates class. We (I include myself) are a chatty bunch and I do my best to keep my group focused and moving, while allowing them to socialize and have a few laughs. If things get to out of control I throw the hundreds/ criss cross/ scissors combo at them and the room gets real quiet real quick.

Back to the study, which showed that sixty seconds of exposure to either a “plus size” or a skinny model can affect our perception of beauty. See a bigger person and bigger people are more attractive to you. See a skinny model and skinny starts looking good (I am paraphrasing, follow the link above to watch the three minute video). Being aware of how the images we see can affect our perception of beauty may help us (and our daughters) develop a healthy body image.

My legs are strong vs. my butt is jiggly.

As a personal trainer I help my clients establish goals to track their progress. “I want to feel better” is vague. “I want to to fit into this pair of pants by August” is specific and measurable. Prior to 2012 I took all of my clients through fitness tests that included push ups, sit ups and a waist measurement. In 2012 I stopped doing these.

anne waist measurement

Here’s why: My clients had been complaining about the push ups (I nodded, smiled and ignored these complaints) but when they complained about the waist measurements I started asking questions. I found out these tests were not being viewed, as I had hoped, as a benchmark for success. They just made my ladies feel bad about themselves and dread test day – who needs that?

While I have not quit doing these entirely, the tests are no longer standard practice. When a new client comes in we discuss her health history, establish her goals, and our plan of action. When it is appropriate I will offer certain strength and cardio tests which may include stairs, a plank hold or push ups, wall sits or squats, and – if they request it – a waist measurement.

I want my clients to feel successful. This “success” varies depending each client and each session. One day they may push their limits, cursing and sweating through a grueling workout, the next session may include quiet release work done lying on the floor (which can be just as challenging in a different way).

When my clients leave feeling positive about their bodies I feel successful.
