The April Five Exercises

April Five – The Crescent Lunge

Each month I assign my clients five moves that they are to do every day. Just one minute per move and you don’t even have to do them all at once! Step back into a crescent lunge while you are waiting for your coffee (or tea) to brew. As you are getting into bed hold your bow pose. You get the idea.

I have added a few photos to jog your memory.

Here we start with the Crescent Lunge.

Crescent Lunge Anne

Also called “High lunge” this move should feel very different than your Warrior II.

Stand near a wall if needed for balance. Step left foot back in to a lunge with left heel off the ground. Track your right knee over your middle toes. Lift up into a back bend.

If this feels uncomfortable, lower your back knee, and back off of the back bend.

Silky Egg Breakfast Soup

What can I say, I’m on a bit of a soup kick this winter. As a matter of fact I have a pot of Tom Kha Gai soup simmering away as I type this.

What about soup for breakfast?

Silky Egg Breakfast Soup-sm.jpg

While not so common here, there are many cultures that start their day with a warm bowl of nourishing soup. My friend Minga offers this breakfast soup recipe featuring highly nutritious chicken broth and eggs. Eggs have gotten a bad rap over the years. I consider them to be a health food and eat eggs almost every day. Eggs provide high quality proteins, vitamins, nutrients, minerals and good fats.

From Minga:

Growing up in Thailand most of our breakfasts were savory. Often we would have noodle soups, rice soups, meats, veggies and eggs of all kinds to nourish us deeply for a day of activity. Personally, a day without eggs is akin to a day without water. We eat eggs every day unless there is a crisis and we can’t get local farmers’ eggs with golden yolks.

This is one of the soups we love to have in the morning designed after congee, but without the starchy rice component. The recipe below is for 2 people. Feel free to double it or triple it depending on your family size. Red Boat fish sauce is a must in this dish to make it taste really Thai. It’s the only fish sauce I have found without sugar in it.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of Thai chicken broth with some of the meat returned to the broth
  • 5 eggs
  • 2 tablespoons fish sauce
  • salt to taste

Garnish possibilities:

  • julienned ginger
  • chopped cilantro
  • chopped green onion
  • dried shrimp
  • fried garlic

Directions:

  • Heat broth and chicken in pot at a medium heat until lightly boiling. While the broth is heating, blend the eggs in a bowl with a hand blender or mix with a blender.
  • Pour the mixed eggs into the broth slowly while stirring. Turn the heat to low and cook for 2 or 3 minutes. Add fish sauce and salt to taste.
  • Serve in portion sized bowls and garnish to taste!
  • Enjoy!

Study Shows Timing Of Massage Treatments Key To Neck Pain Relief

Do you (or does someone you know) suffer from chronic pain? Did you know that massage has been shown to both improve function and pain levels?

According to a recent study clients suffering from neck pain found the greatest relief by receiving therapeutic massage several times a week. Researcher Karen Sherman studied over 200 people. Some received no massage, others received thirty minute massages several times a week, others received sixty minute massages one, two or three times a week (how’d you like to be in that group?). Treatment sessions included range of motion testing and pain level assessment.

Sherman found the sixty minute session performed three times a to be the week most effective.

“people getting massage three times a week were almost five times as likely to have a clinically meaningful (meaning important or noticeable) improvement in function and over twice as likely to report a clinically meaningful decrease in pain.”

Dr. Fredrick Wilson, a spine specialist at the Cleveland Clinic, stressed the need to use a professional massage therapist.

“If done incorrectly, [massage] can actually cause muscle tightening and spasm,” he said. For neck or back pain, “it seems the training and experience make a difference in the amount of pain relief patients get,” he added.

Do you receive regular massages? I personally get some type of body work (Thai massage, myofascial release, cranio sacral) at least once a month. I view this as part of my health maintenance plan, as opposed to a once a year “treat”.

Pain relief, stress reduction, increased mobility, decreased headaches and jaw pain… want to find out what massage therapy can do for you? What are you waiting for? Contact Anne to set up your next massage today!
