If you feel this class is beneficial, you may pop some dough into my paypal “tip jar”.

The video classes have been great, you’re doing an excellent job showing the moves from different angles and all, I haven’t had any trouble following along. I’m really grateful you’re able to do these, it’s been a lifesaver.

Testimonial from S.H., Portland, Oregon

Goals of this workshop:

Improve your online teaching techniques to improve your client’s experience! To do this you need to learn new skills. This is not just a switch to video; this is a whole new way of teaching. You are responsible for creating an oasis for your people – a safe, loving, warm, learning environment where your clients get a break from their stressful day – and create relationships with others in class. When you do this, your students are excited about your classes, they tell their friends, and they can’t wait to come back! You fill your classes and make more money!

The number one thing I have learned from zooming, is the importance of clear verbal cueing. In fact I recently had a client have a technology issue and we did an entire session over the phone! What do you do when your client can’t see you very well, say they are tuning in on their phone or iPad?

It is your responsibility to be able to teach them using your words. We will be using breakout rooms, so you can practice your verbal cuing (including the “positive sandwich”) with each other.

Who do you know who teaches dance classes? Have you (or a family member) taken a dance class from a studio, either here in Portland, or elsewhere? I have developed a brand new program that I am excited to share with the dance community, and I need your help.

Would you be willing to introduce me to a dance instructor?

This could be any type of dance, from ballet, ballroom, bachata, salsa, swing, Jazzercise, or Zumba (to name a few). Teaching classes virtually is a whole different animal than teaching in a studio. I want to share my tips for success with other instructors.

You can help me in two ways:

1. Forward this post to your instructor.
2. Share this post on social media.

Golden Bowl Recipe – with vegan and gluten free options

We are in the middle of very strange times now with regards to food shopping. Can you maintain a healthy, whole food, based diet while hunkering down at home? Check out this recipe for an easy and delicious dinner that you can customize to suit even your pickiest of eaters. The golden sauce hits on savory, sweet, salty, and garlicky notes, and it’s golden hue brightens up any winter day. I did add some sour cream and shredded cheese to my bowl, but you could easily sub non dairy cheese, or just leave these off to make a vegan version.

Start with your favorite grains (I used brown rice, but feel free to sub quinoa, bulgar, or even a short pasta like orzo), add your choice of beans, greens, sliced avocado, peppers, a handful of cilantro, sliced olives, then top it with the sauce. I used canned beans, but you could for sure use dried beans. The hardest, or most time consuming part of this is the prep, so if you slice your veggies and cook your beans and rice ahead of time, you will have a quick and easy supper ready in minutes. Feel free to adjust the ingredients based on your tastes and what you currently have on hand.

Try this recipe and let me know what you think!

Golden Bowl

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup uncooked brown rice
  • 1 can (or about 2 cups) cooked black beans
  •  3/4 can (or about 1 cup) cooked garbanzo beans (you will use some of these in the sauce recipe below…)
  • 1 Tbsp coconut oil
  • 1 Tbsp of tamari or soy sauce
  • 1 bunch of kale, chopped
  • 1 avocado, sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 handful of cilantro
  • 2 Tbsp sliced black olives
  • 1 Tbsp golden sauce (see below for recipe)
  • Optional toppings: 2 Tbsp sour cream, and a sprinkle of shredded cheddar cheese

Golden Sauce:

  • 1/3 cup cooked garbanzo beans (save the rest of the can to use in the bowl)
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • juice and zest from one lemon
  • 2 Tbsp of nutritional yeast
  • 3 Tbsp maple syrup
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • 1 tsp curry powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/3 cup water

To make the sauce: Add all ingredients to a blender or food processor and blend until smooth. If you make it ahead and store it in the fridge it will thicken a little. Add more water, and shake it up, to thin it if needed. I ended up with a pourable salad dressing type consistency.

Directions:

  1. Prepare golden sauce (you can do this up to three days ahead)
  2. Cook rice as directed.
  3. Saute kale for a couple of minutes in coconut oil, then add tamari.
  4. Warm beans.
  5. Assemble your bowl: layer about 1/4 cup rice, 1/4 cup black beans, 1/3 cup garbanzos, 1/4 of the cooked kale, 1/4 of the sliced avocado, 1/4 of the sliced peppers, 1 tsp olives, and as much cilantro as you like. Drizzle a spoonful of golden sauce on top, add your (optional) sour cream, and cheese, and serve! This will make 2-4 bowls depending on your appetite, so just about perfect for a family of four.

Classes Move To Dance With Joy March 2nd!

Fluid’s classes have a new home starting next week! Starting March 2nd, we meet at Dance With Joy Studios: 8051 SE 16th Avenue, Portland, OR 97202

Our evening classes (Yoga, Pilates, Energy Flow) all start at 6:30. Saturday Barre is at 9 am. Teen yoga Thursday 4:30.

I’m super excited for you all to check out this beautiful space. I have known the owner, Rachel, for years, and have tried a variety of dance styles via their lessons and parties. Every instructor is positive, warm, and welcoming. I’ve danced with partners in their 80’s as well as teenagers. Eric and I were taking a foxtrot lesson here last summer and one of the regulars slid over to him and whispered “hey man, nobody is even looking at you, they are watching the instructor and trying to figure out their own footwork”. It was really sweet and immediately put him at ease. In fact, Eric was the one to suggest we move our classes here.

We are going to experience the same warm welcome when we set up shop here next week!

The space is large, clean, bright, and comfortable, with nice wood floors. There are several couches (Bridget I’m looking at you), and a lounge area in the back where you can hang out before or after class. The studio is already set up with all our gear (yoga blocks, mats n such), and I will be bringing some of my stuff over as well, like the foam rollers, BOSU’s, and magic circles – sorry Kathleen 🙂 You are also welcome to bring your own mat or other gear if you prefer.

This is a hop, skip, and a jump from our current digs. Just head south about 6 blocks. The cross streets are 16th and Spokane. Look for the bright blue (teal) double doors. Come on in, head downstairs, and we will be waiting for you! I will be keeping my phone on me for the first few weeks in case there is any confusion about where to go. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to call me. (503) 705-4762

My hope is that you will pre-register for classes. You will have the ability to pre pay with a credit card, or bring cash or check to class with you. If you are unable to do this before next week, come on down a few minutes early and we can go through your paperwork together.

Click here to preregister for any class.

Thanks again for your patience and flexibility as we transition to a new space!

xoxo

Anne
