Maddie’s Ginger Mint Fruit Salad

I was assigned fruit salad to bring to a recent college graduation party. Luckily I had just picked up a whole seedless watermelon at New Seasons.

This fruit salad was a big hit! The little bit of heat and spice from the ginger blends with the citrus to cut the sweetness of the perfectly ripe watermelon. I added cantaloupe and nectarines. You could certainly experiment with other fruit.

I started with an entire watermelon so cut the recipe down if you are not looking to make a party sized (large) salad.

Maddie’s Ginger Mint Fruit Salad:

First, start by making your simple syrup:

  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • one thumb size knuckle of fresh ginger, peeled and sliced thin
  • juice from two limes

In a medium saucepan bring the first three ingredients to a boil. Lower the heat to medium high and cook until the liquid is reduced by half (about 5 minutes). Remove from heat, add lime juice and chill the liquid for a few hours.

Now on to the salad:

  • One small seedless watermelon
  • Half of a cantaloupe
  • Half of a honeydew
  • Four nectarines
  • One small hand full of chopped fresh mint leaves

Chop your fruit into bite size pieces. Tear or coarsely chop the mint and add it to the fruit. When ready to serve strain the syrup, pour over the fruit and gently stir to combine. Add more chopped mint for garnish.

Try this at your next BBQ and let me know what you think.

To say I come from a military family is a bit of an understatement. My grandpa Ira served in the Marine corps and during World War II he fought (and almost died) at Guadalcanal. Grandpa “Papa” McCranie served in the Army and participated in the Normandy invasion. Other members of my family have served in the Navy, Air Force, Marines, U.S. Customs, and the Police force.

Guns and military culture was a part of my childhood. I got an early introduction to gun safety when my father accidentally shot a hole the front window of our house. whoopsie…

We even have a Hollywood military story. One of my relatives, while living in Key West, worked as an extra on the set of the movie PT 109. You see him in the final cut for a few seconds.

Thankfully I grew up hearing military lingo, and war stories, NOT going to military funerals, or spending time in a rehab hospital with a loved one. This weekend I give thanks to all who have served to defend our country during times of peace and war.

I continue to hope for more times of peace than war.

Three Tools For Healthy Feet

Are your feet ready for spring training? As we transition from winter to spring footwear the muscles and tendons in our feet and ankles are work differently. You train the rest of your body, why not pay specific attention to your feet? If you suffer from bunions, hammer toes, or plantar fasciitis this is especially important. Treat your feet to a little TLC and you will be pain free this summer.

Here are the top three tools I use to keep my feet healthy and happy:

  1. Golf ball: Spend five minutes twice a week rolling our your feet and you will notice a difference immediately.
  2. Correct Toes: Wear these toe separators for thirty minutes a day to stretch and strengthen your feet.
  3. Theraband: Lay on your back, wrap a band around your foot and draw your name on the ceiling with your toes.

If you are in need of any of these tools let me know. I sell balls, bands, and Correct Toes and am happy to put together a foot care package and show you how to use all of these goodies.

New TaiJi Fit Experience Starts Wednesday May 15th!

Come flow with us!

This Wednesday we begin a new weekly TaiJi Fit Experience. To see a short video of this click here.

Why am I calling this an “experience” rather than a class? There is nothing to learn, we are moving and grooving. The goal of this work is to get into a meditative state and flow like water. Rather than learn a scripted routine we play with aspects of traditional Tai Chi Chuan using fluid (get it? :)) wavelike movements.

  • Who: You and your Fluid family
  • What: Tai Chi inspired flow. Follow the leader style, no form to learn
  • When: Wednesday mornings (ongoing) 7:30 to 8 am
  • Where: Fluid World Headquarters 7916 S.E. 19th ave
  • Why: Improved strength and flexibility, improved balance and proprioception, reduced stress, better sleep, increased bone density, decreased joint pain…don’t take my word for it, check out this article for more info.
